This collection includes extensive research files (primarily newspaper editorials) on mid-nineteenth century American authors and editors such as Walt Whitman, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allen Poe, and William Leggett. It also includes manuscript diaries (1933-1979) with daily entries in verse.

Noted Walt Whitman scholar Joseph J. Rubin (1912-1980) received a M.A. from Penn State in 1933 and a doctorate from Yale in 1940. He joined the Penn State English Department in 1935, and served as a professor of American literature, retiring in 1978. Rubin started the Bald Eagle Press in 1950, an important influence on the founding of the Penn State Press. From the description of Joseph J. Rubin papers, 1925-1988. The Pennsylvania Humanities Council designated the year 1985 as "The Year of the Pennsylvania Writer." The PHC funded projects in eight locations throughout the Commonwealth to gain appreciation, understanding, and recognition for past and present Pennsylvania writers. The State College/University Park location held a two-stage conference and related events by five Centre County regional organizations.
